Free online martial arts classes open to all children in northern Saskatchewan

Free online martial arts classes are available to all interested children in northern Saskatchewan.

That’s according to La Ronge-based Ninja Kids sensei Chris de Feijter, who has operated his Nihon Jūjutsu program at Pre-Cam Community School for five years. His regularly scheduled, in-person classes were disrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic and he wanted to continue offering his services somehow to keep his students active.

“But, then I thought there are kids in other communities in northern Saskatchewan that also require exercise, so why not introduce them to Ninja Kids,” de Feijter said. “We currently have about 14 people interested, but there hasn’t been much exposure yet.”

The online program starting March 23 will be done on Facebook Live and can be accessed by phone, computer or tablet. It includes 20 minutes of dynamic martial arts, stretching and body conditioning exercises. The classes also don’t require a webcam, de Feijter noted, as the video streaming is only one way.

In order to register, individuals need to look for the Ninja Kids Online private Facebook group and ask to become a member. That’s where de Feijter will announce the training sessions.

“The martial arts that are being taught online focuses more on fitness for the individual person,” he said. “It teaches them some punches, blocks and kicks and those are similar to what you would normally learn at the school. There’s always dangers involved with martial arts, but it depends on the supervision of parents looking after their kids as well.”

de Feijter has studied martial arts for more than 35 years and he noted it’s especially beneficial for children. He said it teaches them how to focus, regulate themselves and enhance their emotional, physical and social well-being.
