LLRIB sets new voting dates, introduces electronic ballots

Apr 30, 2020 | 3:22 PM

Lac La Ronge Indian Band (LLRIB) voters will be headed to the polls in May, in one way or another.

That’s according to an announcement made by the LLRIB council, which stated on the recommendation of the Election Tribunal, the new dates for the election are May 11 to 26. Between those days, electronic voting will be open to all LLRIB members. In-person polling stations are scheduled for May 25 in Stanley Mission and La Ronge, and May 26 in all other communities.

The remaining communities include Brabant Lake, Little Red River, Grandmother’s Bay, Morin Lake, Pinehouse Lake, Prince Albert, Saskatoon and Sucker River.

“In an effort to support social and physical distancing requirements that we are all following, this election will also provide for electronic voting in addition to regular polls,” the announcement states.

To avoid any gaps in governance during the election period, LLRIB council has extended their current term until May 26. As per elections in other years, Chief Tammy Cook-Searson and councillors will officially vacate their offices April 30 for the duration of the 2020 election.

“The election Tribunal recommended that certain provisions be met or exceed in order to safely hold the 2020 election, and should any of those requirements change or should council on the advice and recommendations from health experts decided that it is no longer safe to hold the election, they may postpone the election and resume office until such time as it is safe,” the announcement states.

More information about voting options and the election is expected to be shared soon.

Candidates seeking the three-year term as chief are Natalie Aldridge, Cook-Searson, Bruce Mckenzie, James Mckenzie, Eugene Mirasty and Jude Ratt. Dozens of others are running for a spot as councillor.
