Fire ban for tri-communities comes into force Thursday

May 6, 2020 | 5:07 PM

A fire ban goes into effect Thursday at 8 a.m. for the tri-communities.

That’s according to a notice issued May 7 by the La Ronge Regional Fire Department. It states implementing the ban is supported by Air Ronge, La Ronge, Lac La Ronge Indian Band and Saskatchewan Environment. The ban is expected to be in effect until May 21 at 8 a.m or until the threat of COVID-19 becomes under control.

“This ban has been issued to ensure the risk of any wildfire within the tri-communities is eliminated as much as possible,” the notice signed by Acting-Fire Chief Keaton Cloud states. “With the COVID-19 situation, we understand that in the event of an evacuation, physical distancing and preventing possible transmission to other communities and vice versa would be very difficult. Issuing this ban will ensure our risk of this possibility remains low.”

The fire ban is for all open fires. Traditional smokers, propane barbecues, propane-fuel fire pits and briquettes are allowed. All active burn permits have also been suspended immediately until the ban has been rescinded.
