Ice Wolves recruiting for 2020-21 SJHL season

The novel coronavirus pandemic is keeping many people home, but it hasn’t stopped La Ronge Ice Wolves head coach Kevin Kaminski from recruiting for the 2020-21 Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) season.

Instead of attending spring camps and showcases, Kaminski has been on the phone a lot lately talking with potential players who could join the team. He noted there are several from British Columbia who have already signed to play, while there’s still a few more from that province waiting to see if other opportunities open up before making the decision to relocate.

“Now we’re doing our due diligence by calling their advisor, calling their coaches and calling other coaches in the same division or in the same league as them,” Kaminski said. “We’re looking to see what kind of character they have and how’s their skating, skill, compete, want, and will. You can’t just look at stats.”

Kaminski also would have held the Ice Wolves annual spring camp the third weekend in April as part of recruiting efforts, but it was cancelled due to the virus. He said the next big day for the team will be June 5 when the SJHL holds its draft. Kaminski added Hockey Canada has already issued a release, however, stating nothing can happen until Sept. 1 unless the pandemic situation changes.

In recent weeks, the board has been meeting in regards to fundraising efforts this year. With the lack of large public events, it has become difficult for many groups to raise the funds need to operate. For instance, the Ice Wolves won’t be able to generate funds through the beer gardens or concession at the La Ronge Elks Fair as the three-day event has been cancelled.

“I know the board had some meetings talking about different ideas,” Kaminski said. “We’re going to need to because the fundraising is a big part of our process to keep the team running. Without it, it would be tough. We’re going to need the support from the community and our great fans.”
