La Ronge council approves $65,000 for BORA contigent on federal funding

La Ronge councillors have approved $65,000 for the Boreal Outdoor Recreation Association (BORA) contingent on the group receiving additional dollars from the federal government.

That’s according to BORA member Dr. Dan Irvine, who said they have already applied for extra funding through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program. Initially, BORA had requested $70,000 from the Town of La Ronge, but Irvine noted they are happy with what they received.

“What the Town of La Ronge committed would be $65,000,” he said. “That would be able to be matched by the federal government for an additional $175,000, which would allow us to summarize those seven kilometres with board walks over wetland, puddles and bogs to allow for a comprehensive trail infrastructure for the community.“

Irvine added BORA should find out if they are approved for the federal funds in the next four to six weeks. He also mentioned group members are excited about the opportunity to approve the trail system.

If the federal funds don’t materialize, Irvine said they would continue to work with the town in what they can do together in partnership.

“We have seen a big spike in trail usage this year as people are trying to get out more with the limited recreational activities due to the pandemic,” he said. “Once people get out, they will see the beauty of the trails available and just keep coming back for more.”

La Ronge Mayor Ron Woytowich said it made sense to approve the town’s portion as BORA’s idea and proposal was deemed to have merit. He noted the group was also organized with their attempt to secure more funding from a second source.

“What we ended up doing with the town is all of council agreed that’s a good thing if they could get the rest of the grant,” Woytowich said. “We approved it and its up for them now to apply for that other money. If they get it, the town will come up with our share.”
