Trail Closure

Nut Point Trail closed due to bear sightings

May 25, 2020 | 5:00 PM

The Nut Point Trail in the Lac La Ronge Provincial Park is closed due to multiple sightings of bears.

“It’s been closed for a couple of days,” said Park Manager Natasha Merriman. “There were a couple reports of bears on the trail by different folks who were on there. We just thought it would be prudent to put up some signage that there is a bear in the area to make people aware.”

Safety of hikers is the top reason why the trail has been closed as Merriman noted there are currently no plans to trap the bear and relocate it. She added hopefully it will move on soon on its own and conservation officers are actively monitoring the situation. Once it’s determined the bear has likely left the area, the trail will reopen to the public.

If the bear remains in the area for some time, Merriman said conservations officers will likely need to come up with another solution to deal with it.

“It’s a fairly normal occurrence,” she said. “In general, in the spring, there have been reports of people running into them on the Nut Point Trail, Don Allen Trail and that type of thing.”
