Daily rainfall record set in La Ronge

La Ronge has beaten a daily rainfall record for the month of May.

That’s according to Environment and Climate Change Canada Meteorologist Terri Lang, who said as of 12 p.m. on May 27, 42.3 millimeters of rain fell so far on the date. With more rain forecasted for throughout the day, she noted the daily rainfall record will be even more significant.

“It’s hard to believe how much rain has fallen so far,” Lang said. “There has been no other wetter day in May than today. The old record was 41.2 millimeters set on May 20, 1977.”

Over the past 48 hours, Lang explained there was a total of 54.3 millimeters of rainfall. So far this month, there been a total of 93.8 millimeters. She added the amount of precipitation is a bit higher due to the fact there was also some snow earlier this month.

All the rain is due to a low-pressure system moving in from Alberta. The system began Tuesday and it formed thunderstorms as it moved into Saskatchewan. Lang said while much of the southern portion of the province is receiving high winds, the North is experiencing all the rain.

“This will slowly pull out over the next day or so, but I still think you’re going to have more rain for the day,” she said. “It’s looking better for the weekend. It does look drier for sure, but one this moves out, we’re looking at more precipitation that might come through Sunday night and into Monday as another low-pressure system spins through.”

Lang also had some advice to share as the large amount of rain can lead to certain issues. For instance, she recommends motorists to avoid flooded areas as it is unknown why the area is flooded or if the road has washed away. Lang also advised residents to ensure eavestroughs are clear of debris, so water can flow away from local residences efficiently.
