Bernatchez has big plans for Sucker River

New Sucker River Coun. Devin Bernatchez has big plans for the community, but his first priority going into office is protecting local residents from COVID-19.

“We have been dealt a hand we have never seen before and COVID-19 has brought a lot of worry and stress to people,” he said. “It’s still a priority for us in ensuring our community is safe. We still have our road monitoring security station, so we want to ensure we are keeping our community and elderly safe.”

Bernatchez is the only councillor representing Sucker River having won the spot in a local four-way race with 112 votes. He credits his family for much of his success and he also feels proud so many residents placed their trust in him. The day after the election is when Bernatchez said he started helping people.

There are many areas Bernatchez would like to address during his term in office such as creating more initiatives for youth and Elders, more sports and cultural events, as well as projects to do with education and economic development. For instance, he noted there’s a store currently being built in Sucker River he’d like to open to the public soon.

“Also, just working with community members on some of their issues,” Bernatchez said. “They have been giving me phone calls about some of the help and assistance they need.”

Since the election one week ago, Bernatchez has been at the local band office getting to know the procedures in place. He mentioned he already knows much of the staff and he’s been talking with them about some of his plans for the community.

This election marked the first time Bernatchez has ever run for office. Prior to the election, he worked as a constituency assistant for Cumberland NDP MLA Doyle Vermette and as a teacher at Senator Myles Venne School.
