Individual ceremonies for Churchill Community High School graduates

Jun 15, 2020 | 3:39 PM

It was on a decorated trailer hitched to the back of a truck, but Churchill Community High School graduate Paige Lee had her final moments as a student in style.

“It went good. I liked it,” she said of her short five-minute backyard graduation. “It kind of sucks I didn’t have a big ceremony, but it’s nice they put the effort in it too.”

Lee is the first of at least 52 graduates in La Ronge and area who will receive their diplomas in such a way. Each one will be presented their diploma by the school’s administration, which will be followed by a short speech and rose presentation in honour of those who were of importance during the years. Lee decided to give her rose to her parents Wayne and Florence Lee.

Churchill Vice-Principal Kristianna Merasty was among those who participated in the ceremony and she said the stage was put together by a group of people last week. As opposed to a traditional graduation ceremony, she noted the individual ceremonies have been more personalized and they have been able to spend more time talking about each grad.

So far, there are 52 students set to graduate, but Merasty added up to 60 could do so if the meet the requirements by Friday. Monday is the last day the school will be performing individual ceremonies.

“We adapted really well to the change,” she said. “I’ve talked to other schools and they think what we have done is a pretty good idea. We just have to roll with the punches because that’s just how things are right now.”

As a parent, Florence Lee said she was unbelievably grateful for all those who put the ceremony together. She mentioned the coronavirus has placed many sudden obstacles in the way of life, but people have found innovative ways to get done what they need to do.

“I’m really amazed they were able to come up with such a nice looking and creative solution,” Florence Lee said. “I’m really glad that they did that.”
