La Ronge RCMP warn of increased calls linked to gift card scams

Jun 19, 2020 | 5:01 PM

La Ronge RCMP is reminding the public to report phone scams after receiving an increase in calls regarding gift cards.

That’s according to an RCMP media release, which states officers will investigate these offences and are asking residents to report them if they are happening to you. Those who encounter such a scam should contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre online at www.antifraudcentre.ca or by calling 1-888-495-8501.

The release also includes tips to help the public to avoid being scammed. Those tips include advice such as RCMP detachments will not call and threaten you to make payments or purchases, and will not request that you make payments using crypto currencies such as Bitcoin or gift cards, or money transfers, or visa cards.

Police also recommend not giving personal information out over the phone including bank information or Social Insurance Numbers, and do not send anyone any money or anything if you think it is suspicious.
