La Ronge’s Penney signs contract with Regina Thunder

Hayden Penney has signed a contract to join Regina Thunder of the Canadian Junior Football League in the fall.

He first started playing football in Grade 9 at La Ronge’s Churchill Community High School and did so until he graduated in 2019. Penney, who spent the last year at Northlands College studying business administration, tried out for the Thunder in February and will continue his education at the University of Regina when he relocates in August.

“To be honest, what I show is a lot of hard work and determination over anything else,” he said. “I definitely wouldn’t be the best athlete out of the bunch, but I have a very good work ethic and coaches always see I put the best effort I possibly can on every play.”

Penney wanted to thank his former high school coaches Gabe Andrews, Kyle Faulkner and Nate Shaw for encouraging and teaching him how to be an all-around good athlete. He said he didn’t know anything about football before he joined the program.

During the Churchill Chargers season last fall, Penney also assisted with coaching duties. For those who want to achieve the same level of success as him, his advice is to work hard in the gym, on the field and in school. He noted good things happen for those who work hard.

“I have a buddy on the team right now, Justin McKerracher, and he said I would have a good shot making it this year, so I started lifting weights and training again,” Penney said.
