Canada Day events cancelled in La Ronge

Jun 25, 2020 | 1:21 PM

Canada Day festivities are enjoyed by all in the tri-communities, but this year residents will have to accept a much quieter holiday.

“We’re encouraging people to go out and celebrate in their own backyard due to COVID,” said La Ronge Parks and Recreation Manager Tonia Logan. “Bringing people together is just not the right time this year.”

During a typical year, the Kikinahk Friendship Centre would host a pancake breakfast, which would be followed by a parade along La Ronge Ave. The urban reserve and Patterson Park serve as the setting for the La Ronge Children’s Festival in the afternoon, while residents gather near the beach and on the lake for a firework show at dusk.

All of the above mentioned events have been cancelled this year. Organizers of the La Ronge Children’s Festival decided to cancel back in April.

“We do encourage people to go out and buy any Canada Day celebration flags, and put them up in your yard and show your pride,” Logan said. “We just can’t come together as a group for fireworks, a parade or anything like that this year.”

The last time Canada Day events were cancelled were due to the forest fire back in 2015. At that time, the events were held in September instead.

Logan mentioned there’s still money in the budget for what would have occurred Canada Day and hopefully some day in the future the municipality can hosts something bigger and better.
