Lac La Ronge Food Bank returns to serving clients

Jul 8, 2020 | 1:55 PM

The Lac La Ronge Food Bank is once again open to serve residents of the tri-communities.

Volunteers began accepting orders Monday through a new system designed to limit contact between those at the food bank and the clients they serve. For instance, orders must be placed on Mondays between the hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. by dialing 1-306-425-1259. The order, which must be placed by speaking directly to a volunteer, will then be delivered to the residence on Tuesday between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.

“I think we have a fairly good system set up and it seems to be working well,” Board Member Trudy Connor said. “This will be with us for a long time. For sure as long as COVID is around and there is no end in sight for that.”

While the food bank can assist a maximum of 50 people per week, Connor said this week they had well-below that number. She attributed the low numbers due to the recent release of GST and Old Age Pension cheques, as well as the fact many clients likely didn’t know they re-opened. Connor also noted anyone can call for a food hamper as they don’t need to be a previous client.

Although the food bank also can’t accept food donations at this time, they are accepting cash donations which can be received either via etransfer or by sending a cheque in the mail. Connor noted the non-profit is also always looking for volunteers and people can email laclarongefoodbank@gmail.com to help.

“We will get in touch with you with what we need help with volunteering, and people can pick and choose,” she said.
