NLSD submits plan for students returning to class in September

The Northern Lights School Division (NLSD) has submitted a draft plan to the provincial government detailing the precautions that will be in place when students return in September.

That’s according to NLSD Director of Education Jason Young, who said the plan was submitted to the Ministry of Education June 30, as well as the Saskatchewan Health Authority last week. He expects to receive feedback on the document in the coming weeks, noting it will be updated with feedback from the province if required.

“We have questions as well in terms of the roll out, but what we’re planning for is a typical school start up,” Young said. “That’s where we are today, but there are still a lot of pieces we have to work through in terms of preparation.”

When students return to school, Young mentioned classes will likely be done in a traditional classroom setting with some changes. For instance, he said students will remain in one classroom for most of the day to avoid movement with teachers coming to the students to teach. Young also added there will also be precautions when it comes to using shared resources like computers or library material.

As for sports and other extra-curricular activities, Young said there hasn’t been any announcement made by the provincial government in terms of continuing those programs in the fall.

“It’s still early to share how schools will be like in regards to health and safety protocols for cleaning,” he said. “Personal hygiene practices and procedures for recess, entering and exiting schools and movement of staff in the building are still working pieces.”

The school division is also in the process of gathering supplies and equipment for the upcoming academic year. Young noted it’s important they have enough resources stockpiled as many other division are also seeking the same supplies.
