Soft launch for Keethanow Corner Cone

Jul 28, 2020 | 4:46 PM

Keethanow Corner Cone held a soft opening today and served up a lot of hard ice cream.

With the temperature reaching 29 Celsius in the tri-communities, it didn’t take long for local residents to learn about the new shop dishing out cold treats. Located behind Keethanow Gas Bar, Manager Brent Lee said for now the seasonal store will sell ice cream, floats, pop, bottled water and chips until it closes at the end of September.

“We will see how it goes this year and we may expand into other things next year, possibly cotton candy, candy apples and stuff like that,” he said. “It’s something our board has wanted for a while and they kind of let me run with it here.”

Lee explained work to open the ice cream shop began in 2019, noting it will likely run from before the May long weekend to the end of September every year. While it was only open until 6 p.m. for the soft launch, starting July 29 it will be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week.

In total, 10 employees will be hired to work in the store and Lee added he will be seeking younger people for seasonal employment opportunities.

“It’s only a seasonal job for the kids, just to get them some experience,” he said. “When they go off to college or university or move away, they have some experience so they can get jobs elsewhere.”
