Île-à-la-Crosse approved for $225,000 student carpenter housing project
The federal and provincial governments have come together to fund a $225,000 housing project in Île-à-la-Crosse involving local high school students.
Île-à-la-Crosse Mayor Duane Favel explained it will be the fifth housing unit to be built in the village through a unique partnership in recent years. He said support by the local municipality, Île-à-la-Crosse School Division, Sakitawak Development Corporation and levels of government have made the project a success in the past.
“This is where young students get to know whether or not their passion is in the trades,” Favel said. “When they enter this program, they clearly understand whether or not it excites them and if they want to do it as a career. It’s helpful to find out some of the skills our students have and the ones who are really interested gravitate towards that area.”
Students, along with a journeyman carpenter and a teacher, will begin building the three-bedroom, single level house likely in January 2021. Favel expects the project will be completed by June, before it’s turned over to the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation to be rented out to tenants. The project is meant to attract northerners to the trades, as well as provide affordable housing for families.
