The only elementary school in La Ronge is closed until further notice after a case of coronavirus was identified there.

That’s according to a letter released Wednesday to parents from Northern Lights School Division Director of Education Jason Young. It notes the school division is working with public health staff to ensure necessary measures are in place to protect all students.

It adds the virus spreads person-to-person by large, respiratory droplets from a cough or a sneeze.

“The health, safety and well-bring of our school community remains our top priority,” the letter states. “We are following sound protocols aligned with expert health guidance to ensure we are doing everything we can to protect students’ health.”

The division also wants remind parents and students of the importance of wearing masks, staying six-feet apart from others and regular hand washing. If any students develop coronavirus symptoms, parents are asked to contact HealthLine at 811 and remain at home.

“Please know that we are here to support you and your family,” the letter notes. “We sincerely appreciate all your help and support as we work together to mitigate risks.”

larongeNOW reached out to Young for an interview, but didn’t receive a response by publishing.

A letter was also sent to parents on behalf of the Lac La Ronge Indian Band’s (LLRIB) Education Department and Director of Education Simon Bird. It mentions a case of coronavirus was identified in an individual who is associated with Senator Myles Venne School. The letter states, however, the individual was outside of the school and there are no positive cases that have been identified in the school.

“All LLRIB schools will remain open including Senator Myles Venne School,” it notes. “The decision to keep schools open has been made in consultation with LLRIB Health and the medical health officer.”
