Economic development, community safety among priorities for Fiske in mayor race

Tracy Fiske, who has been a resident of La Ronge for nearly 28 years, wants residents to know she will be transparent and consistent if elected mayor Nov. 9.

“I don’t want to make promises, but I’d like to improve our community through various ways,” Fiske said. “I believe there is a lot of opportunity for business to expand and grow. I believe we can make this community brighter. I love our community and I think we have so many opportunities to make it better if we all work together.”

Fiske also believes she has the experience for the position considering she’s served two terms on council already with the second term as deputy-mayor. She noted she doesn’t have a post-secondary education, but she has been employed as a realtor since 2007 and has raised children in the community.

There are a number of areas Fiske would like to focus her attention on if elected mayor. For instance, her priorities include economic development, community safety, leisure and recreation, tourism and strong community partnerships.

“I really believe there should be a women’s perspective on council, regardless if it’s as a councillor or as mayor,” Fiske added. “I believe a woman can bring a different perspective.”

Fiske mentioned she decided to run as mayor instead of councillor because she wanted to challenge herself. If elected, she said residents would get a mayor who cares with values such as accountability, consistency, experience, integrity and transparency.

“My children are grown, so I have more spare time and I think it is time for me to give back to the community that I love,” Fiske said. “I have done two terms as a councillor and I just thought it was time for maybe a woman to be in office. I think I can do this. I can positively give back to my community.”

Three other residents are also campaigning for mayor including Deputy-Mayor Matthew Klassen, Coun. Glen Watchel and Colin Ratushniak.
