La Ronge residents head to polls to vote

Nov 9, 2020 | 12:33 PM

After all the votes are counted tonight, La Ronge will have a new mayor to lead the town for four years.

Polls opened at 9 a.m. this morning at the Kikinahk Friendship Centre and will remain open until 8 p.m. tonight. In 2016, there was a record voting turnout of 624 and returning officer Allyson Richards said 422 residents have already voted in advanced polls. There were 177 votes cast Oct. 27 and another 245 on Nov. 3.

“We are two-thirds of the way there already going into election day,” she said. “Either many of the voters who would come on election day have come early to cast their ballot or more people are engaged in the election and will be casting their ballot.”

After the polls close, the counting process will begin. Richards noted candidates and up to two of their agents are allowed to be present during the counting procedures. If they leave the facility during counting, they will not be permitted re-entry.

Richards added there are no ballots designated to be counted first and she’s unsure how long the counting will take.

“Based on previous elections, I expect it to take until early hours of the morning (Nov. 10),” she said. “It’s not like other elections where there is only one ballot and one name to read off of. These elections have one ballot for mayor and another ballot for councillor with upwards of six names on it to go through, so it takes some time. Our election officials will be working as quickly as they can.”

Richards mentioned she will share the official results with the public no later than 1 p.m. tomorrow.
