SaskCup Races cancelled, Saskaloppet to be announced

The La Ronge Ski Club has cancelled the SaskCup Races scheduled to occur Dec. 5 and 6.

That’s according to President Heather Bernardin, who said the cancellation is due to the provincial government’s pause on sports as an effort to stop the spread of the coronavirus. She was unsure if those events would be rescheduled, but club members are in contact with its provincial sports body.

“We do have the snow for it, but due to guidelines, we’re not allowed to have any sports competition,” Bernardin said.

In consultation with a local health inspector and medical health officer, Bernardin explained the club has been working on a coronavirus protocol to keep skiers safe. For instance, there have been some adjustments to the ski lesson programs. Bernardin noted once the protocol is finalized, it will be posted on the club’s website and Facebook page.

Bernardin also mentioned they are working to find ways to deliver programming for the jackrabbit program, which currently has 60 kids registered. As per provincial guidelines, only 30 skiers are permitted to attend a lesson at one time.

“We’re still working through the finer details of it to accommodate as many kids as we can within the guidelines,” she said.

As for the Don Allen Saskaloppet, Bernardin said the club will need to wait to see what the province’s guidelines are closer to the date to decide whether to move forward or not. The Saskaloppet is currently scheduled to begin March 5, 2021.

“Right now, the Saskaloppet is sort of TBA, but we’re doing are hardest to put on some version of events if possible,” she said.
