Arctic air will bring below-average temperatures this weekend

After a stretch of unseasonal weather in recent weeks, cold air from the arctic will arrive in the tri-communities this weekend.

“We’re certainly getting into a pattern change meaning we’re getting into the colder air and more winter-like conditions,” said Environment and Climate Change Canada Meteorologist Terri Lang. “It’s quite mild just looking at the temperature anomaly for last 90 days, meaning how much warmer it has been on-average for the last 90 days and its been running 3 to 4 C above average.”

Lang explained residents can expect sunny skies in the next couple days as the temperature begins to plunge. For Thursday, residents will see a high of -12 C and a low of -18 C, but by Saturday, the daytime high will be -22 C and the overnight low will be -30 C.

The 30-year average for this time of year is a high of -14 C and a low of -26 C.

“We’re going to actually get below-average and it’s going to feel excessively cold just because we haven’t really had any cold weather so far this winter,” Lang said. “This is what some people call the polar vortex, but it’s just a winter pattern. The jet stream is now to the south of the province, so we’re on the cold side of jet. We’ve been on the warm side of the jet for much of the winter.”

Lang mentioned residents should be prepared for the cold weather, noting those who spend time outdoors should dress in layers and make sure they cover their extremities. She added the windchill will also be present meaning frostbite can occur quickly.

“Just keep an eye on the temperature and make sure you don’t spend too much time outdoors,” Lang said.
