Major sewage backup in Stanley Mission caused by kitchen grease

Mar 2, 2021 | 5:11 PM

Several families in Stanley Mission fled their homes during the weekend after a major sewer backup.

Ashley Coyne was one resident who had to do so when the toilet in her bathroom began overflowing at about midnight on Feb. 27. She called for security right away, but by the time they were picked up about half hour later, sewage covered the entire first floor of the house.

Coyne noted the sewage was about two feet high before it all spilled into a crawl space.

“The next following day we were offered a teacherage from our local Coun. Jimmy Charles,” she said. “It’s just a temporary stay here until they know what’s going to happen to our home.”

larongeNOW was unable to contact Lac La Ronge Indian Band leadership about the backup, but a community notice states the flooding that affected multiple households was caused by pouring grease down drains or flushing it down toilets. Residents were advised to discard their cooking grease by waiting for it to cool, before placing it in a container and throwing it away in the garbage.

Coyne was sharing the home with two other adults and four children. She mentioned household items such as furniture, beds, dresser, carpets, toys and more are unusable and will need to be replaced.

“Donations would be great for us to get back to where we were and just help us through the process,” Coyne said. “I’m very thankful for the band right now because, without them, we wouldn’t be here in a teacherage. We would be homeless. My whole family in Stanley Mission is already crowded and we wouldn’t have anywhere else to go if it wasn’t for the band.”

If anyone would like to reach Coyne about a donation, she can be found on Facebook.
