Plans for long-term care facility in La Ronge to enter detailed design phase soon

The development of an 80-bed long-term care facility in La Ronge will be discussed a tonight’s regular council meeting.

“It’s actually on our agenda, so they’ve (the Ministry of Health) come to us with a potential memorandum of understanding and letter of commitment to start the next phase,” La Ronge Mayor Colin Ratushniak said. “I am really excited for that project to potentially keep going.”

In an email from the Ministry of Health to larongeNOW, it was confirmed the provincial government has approved proceeding with planning and design on a new facility for the community. The email also noted the project will soon be ready to advance to the detailed design phase.

Ratushniak explained that phase could include getting the land accessed and setting the parameters for the size of the lot the ministry wants purchase. He added he didn’t know if the phase would include any kind of public consultation.

“I think we have to leave that to the health professionals who know what the requirements are for a facility of that nature,” Ratushniak said.

He’s also hopeful the provincial government will set aside funds for the construction of the building in the upcoming budget set to be announced April 6.

The province previously announced the facility would include 70 long stay beds with another 10 for respite care. It will replace the 16-bed long-term care space currently at the La Ronge Health Centre and will serve the north-central area of Northern Saskatchewan.

The facility is expected to be complete in 2023.
