Piwapan seeking participants for virtual empowerment program

Stepping into adulthood can be overwhelming, which is why Piwapan Women’s Centre is launching a new program for female identifying youth.

Called the Virtual Youth Empowerment Program, those who wish to participate must also be between the ages of 15 to 18 and have time for two, one-and-a-half hour meetings each week for two months.

“We are hoping to help provide financial support and registration for IDs such as birth certificates and SGI cards,” Piwapan Outreach Worker Chris Halkett said. “Also, providing life skills and tools for them to carry on into their adulthood.”

Halkett explained meetings will teach participants how to set up a bank account, learn about university applications, scholarships and post-secondary funding. Through the program, human resources will also be available to assist in preparing for a job interview and they’ll let participants know what employers look for in applications or resumes.

With restrictions still in place due to the coronavirus pandemic, Halkett noted participates will have the opportunity to meet others their age as well.

“I think it would be a good opportunity for youth to get involved with each other on a virtual platform and hopefully build up those lasting relationships that can go on, especially after the COVID restrictions have been lifted in a safer space,” she said.

Those who would like to join the program should reach out to Halkett by March 24 by calling 1-306-420-8640 or email piwapan@sasktel.net. The program is expected to last until May 17.

Piwapan Women’s Centre also has other programs currently underway via Zoom. Kokum’s Club began March 2 and is held twice per week. Participants in that program are sewing together star cushions and blankets.

The Iskwesis Club is another program that has moved online and it’s meant for females between 12 and 25. That club recently discussed topics such as safety and healthy relationships.
