Wollaston Lake ice road closing Thursday

Apr 14, 2021 | 5:00 PM

The final ice road still open for the season will close April 15 at 8 a.m.

The Wollaston Lake Ice Road, which is currently open to medium loads only and maintained by the provincial government, will close tomorrow morning for the remainder of the year. The road opened Feb. 18, which was a bit later than average due to heavy snow and slush conditions during construction.

“It will close tomorrow April 15, which is a bit later than average,” Ministry of Highways spokesperson David Horth stated in an email to larongeNOW. “Wollaston is closing because of deteriorating ice conditions, plus mud and exposed rocks on the overland section.”

The Stony Rapids to Fond du Lac ice road opened Feb. 4 and closed April 10 due to deteriorating ice conditions caused by high water and an above-average current. Horth noted this year’s opening fell within the typical range, but closed a bit later than usual.
