JRMCC fitness facility expansion underway

Apr 19, 2021 | 1:51 PM

A renovation is currently underway at the Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre’s fitness facility.

“We’re going through another expansion for the fitness centre, which requires removing some rooms within the facility because we don’t have much space to really expand as much as we’d like to,” said fitness coordinator Colin Ratushniak. “So, just removing the kitchen and the bathroom and some interior walls, just so we can have some space again so we can continue to increase the service levels to our member base.”

Ratushniak explained the renovation will take three to six weeks to be completed. He noted, however, there will be no interruption to service for members as the running track, which is currently closed, is being used for storage or additional space.

There will be two new rig systems added to the facility and perhaps a boxing bag. While the centre does have equipment put away and not in use at the moment, Ratushniak said members will also be consulted on if there is anything in particular they would like to see.

“Since I started 13 or 14 months ago here, we went from an active user base of about 100 members to now close to 300,” he said. “I think people are seeing the value in fitness and that our facility has grown into a place that’s inclusive and a place people want to be.”

Even though there will be more space in the facility, Ratushniak doesn’t expect the capacity under COVID restrictions will increase because of it.
