Firefighters, RCMP respond to man walking on Lac La Ronge

Apr 30, 2021 | 12:00 PM

Members of the La Ronge Regional Fire Department and La Ronge RCMP responded to a call Thursday about a man walking on the ice on Lac La Ronge.

Fire Chief Keaton Cloud stated in an email to larongeNOW that crews received a call at 2:30 p.m. about someone walking on the ice. When firefighters arrived, members could see the man walking towards Kitaski Island. Ice rescue technicians and an RCMP officer walked to Kitaski Island and assisted the man back to shore.

While it’s unknown why the man was walking on the ice, RCMP Staff Sgt. Dean Bridle noted the individual was under the influence of alcohol.

The public is urged to stay off the ice as conditions are unknown and unsafe. The westside of Kitaski Island is nearly all open along the shoreline from the currents from the river. Cloud added this is not the time of year to venture out on the ice.
