It was a special moment for 16-year-old Molly Graham, who was surprised with an uplifting video message from one of her favourite drag queens.

Graham has been watching RuPaul’s Drag Race for a couple of years, but the latest season featured a contestant named Denali who Graham took a liking to.

“She was my favourite because she was just so positive and was very genuine and she brought a different sort of style to drag to the TV show,” Graham said. “She was authentic and really kind.”

It was after she watched the show when she noticed a photo on Instagram featuring Denali with La Ronge Mayor Colin Ratushniak. Ratushniak is a friend of the Graham family and once he found out about Molly’s interest in Denali, he reached out to the television star and asked if she could send a message.

In the video, Denali tells Graham she’s strong and independent. She also says she’s rooting for her.

“It was a crazy feeling,” Graham said when she was surprised with the message. “I wasn’t expecting it at all.”

Graham explained she enjoys watching RuPaul’s Drag Race because of the positivity and encouragement demonstrated in the show. She said the show has a message to be unapologetically you.

Brooke Graham watched the show with her daughter and said there are many empowering messages. She added the content and storylines make it more than a reality TV show.

“There’s a realness to it,” Brooke Graham said. “It just seems to be people who have really struggled with being marginalized and struggled to accept themselves found a way to accept themselves and overcame a lot of their own personal adversity and struggles that they’ve experienced.”
