Golfing season starts in La Ronge

The nine-hole golf course at Eagle Point Resort is open to the public as of May 7.

Since opening Friday, Eagle Point owner Lolita Poirier said local golfers have been stopping by and the weather is cooperating. She noted the course is quite dry, adding men’s night is on Tuesdays, ladies night is Wednesdays and couples night is Thursday.

Poirier was able to open a week earlier than 2020 as public health orders last year prohibited golf courses to open any earlier than May 15.

“I think golf was really successful last year because it’s an activity that people could do outside and maintain their social distance,” she said. “This year, it’s starting off with a bang again. It’s been a long winter for everybody, so they are just anxious to get outdoors and see other people, while still maintaining that social distancing and being able to visit.”

While at this point no large gatherings are allowed, Poirier explained people are still invited to book times for tournaments. In the coming months, Saskatchewan is expected to re-open if the provincial government’s COVID-19 vaccination targets are met.

The Eagle Point Junior Golf Academy is also likely to start next week and Poirier said she’ll be sending an email to all former students about it soon. Professional golfer Jerry Christiansen will be working with the juniors this season along with volunteers Darcy McPhail and Steve Hopper. Christiansen will also be providing private lessons.

“We are also partnering this year with the Lac La Ronge Indian Band,” Poirier said. “They are renting the driving range and operating it as such. People will have the chance to rent some balls and hit them and not have to worry about picking them themselves.”

Poirier also wanted to remind the public the resort offers free golf to anyone 18 and under. Those who are under 16 should be accompanied by an adult.

Anyone wishing to book a tee time can do so online by calling the pro shop at 1-306-425-2273 ext. 222.
