‘It’s about us’: Dorion running for MN-S regional representative

May 11, 2021 | 1:24 PM

Anne Dorion, who is seeking election as the Métis Nation – Saskatchewan (MN-S) regional representative for Northern Region 1, believes the time is right for her to run for the position.

“There is a lot of work to be done and I bring a lot of skills, history and enthusiasm to getting it done,” she said. “Quite a number of people had approached me, so I seriously considered it and consulted my family and friends and made a decision to do it.”

Dorion explained the time is right because there is developmental work that needs to be completed in establishing a regional government. That includes laying down the infrastructure and programming to meet the needs of citizens in the region and Métis Nation. Dorion noted that work will involve including citizens in the communities.

Dorion has experience in administration, business and holds a Bachelor of Education degree. She retired from the education field about a year and a half ago. Dorion was born in Cumberland House, but has lived in La Ronge since the 1970s.

“The most important thing is to recognize that as a regional director, I am a servant,” she said. “I am not there to boss people around and put my agenda ahead of everyone else’s. I’m very committed to improving the lives of children and their families.”

There have been many organizations Dorion has been involved with and she currently sits as the regional representative for Métis Women of Saskatchewan. She has also served with La Ronge Native Women’s Council, Saskatchewan Native Women’s Association and with the Saskatchewan Coalition Against Racism. She has also been involved with the Métis Local in La Ronge.

Dorion lives in La Ronge with her husband Tony Bunz. She has also raised children in the tri-communities who are all now adults.

“I believe very strongly in cooperation and that we move forward together when we work on common goals,” Dorion said. “That’s my focus in this campaign. It’s not about me, it’s about us.”

The MN-S election will be held May 29. Local voting will occur at 408 La Ronge Avenue.
