‘A new voice’: Lafleur in three-way race for MN-S regional representative

May 13, 2021 | 1:16 PM

Glenn Lafleur believes it’s the right time for him to enter politics, which is why he’s asking for votes to become the Métis Nation – Saskatchewan (MN-S) regional representative for Northern Region 1.

“It’s something that I’ve always wanted to do, but it seemed like the time wasn’t right,” he said. “I feel this time, it’s the right time. There is a lot of exciting things happening in the Métis Nation. That’s my reason for doing it.”

Lafleur wants voters to know he has a vast network and resources built during his career that will help the citizens of Northern Saskatchewan. He said he has been involved in areas such as education, employment and training, family services and industry.

Lafleur holds a Bachelor of Education degree, having worked in the past as a teacher and principal. He then worked in the resource industry for 13 years and was employed by Orano Canada as the manager of northern affairs. In that role, he looked after environmental stewardship, community investment, workforce development and business advisory.

“I want to make sure the voters know I’m going to commit myself to work with the locals, the smaller ones, visit the communities and develop short and long-term strategic plans for them,” Lafleur said. “Be available for them and look at all the different opportunities we can bring to the region and make our region strong.”

There number of boards Lafleur has been involved throughout the years, including Gabriel Dumont Institute, Jim Brady Métis Local 19, Kikinahk Friendship Centre, La Ronge Ice Wolves and Northlands College. He noted participating in those boards gave him a good cross-section of experience.

Lafleur was born in Beauval, but moved to La Ronge 25 years ago. He lives in La Ronge with his wife Nancy and has raised two daughters in the tri-communities.

“It’s a new voice for a united vision for our region,” Lafleur said. “That’s what I’m going to work for. That’s my motto and I want to make sure everyone is represented, informed and it’s the region that will develop its own path going forward with their suggestions.”

Lafleur also has a goal to ensure every Métis individual in the region has equal opportunities, equal benefits and equal support. He said the youth need to be heard and Elders need support.

The MN-S election will be held May 29. Local voting will occur at 408 La Ronge Avenue.
