La Ronge Elks Fair cancelled for second consecutive year

A much looked forward to event in the tri-communities is cancelled for the second consecutive year.

It was announced Monday the La Ronge Elks Fair, which is typically held every July, will once again not proceed. Elks Club member Thomas Sierzycki explained the three-day event was cancelled as a precaution to protect tri-community residents against COVID-19.

“Our hope it to really gear up for next year knowing we are trending in the right direction in the province in having a full-fledged fair, and really making it a special fair coming out of the two-year pandemic,” he said. “It’s not only a community event that we love having and really enjoy participating in, it’s a significant fundraiser for us and that fundraiser does give back to community organizations across the tri-community.”

Even without that fundraising source in 2020, Sierzycki noted the club is still in a good financial position because of the accumulation of fairs held over the years. He added the organization has been strategic with funds and has low operating costs.

“This year we have done some other things, smaller type fundraisers internally, that have given us stability and ensuring that not only our hall, for example, and things like that are taken care of, but as an organization, that we’re healthy,” Sierzycki said. “As an organization, we continue to give out funds to residents and causes that require them and we’re looking forward to continue to do so.”

In 2019, Canuck Amusements brought 19 rides to La Ronge for children and youth, as well as numerous food and merchandise booths, games of chance and more. The La Ronge Elks Fair has been cancelled three times including 2021, 2020 and due to wildfires in 2015.

“We’re just as disappointed as community residents are because it is such an important thing for so many families in our area,” Sierzycki said. “We promise we will be back next year with a stronger, awesome fair that families can enjoy.”

Last week, it was announced the Prince Albert Exhibition Summer Fair has also been cancelled due to COVID-19.
