Pilot project aimed at easing park access for traditional land users

A pilot project between the Lac La Ronge Indian Band (LLRIB) and Lac La Ronge Provincial Park (LLRPP) will make the region easier to access for traditional land users.

That’s according to LLRPP manager Natasha Merriman, who said the one-year project will involve the band issuing annual traditional resource use vehicle entry permits out of the Lands and Resources department.

“The permit can be used at all the parking locations within the park or where vehicle entry permits are required,” she said. “At the time, it is only open to LLRIB members, so they can visit the band office and pick up their annual park specific vehicle entry permit there.”

Park permits for the LLRPP was introduced in 2020 and funds raised are used for maintenance including roads, trails and other projects. Since the park office has limited hours and more people visiting the band office, Merriman said it should make access to getting a traditional permit easier.

“Vehicle park entry permits are still required in the park,” she said. “Daily and weekly can be purchased online now and be printed at home or purchased at the park office. Regular and annual permits can be purchased at the La Ronge and Air Ronge Co-op gas stations or the park office.”

With the May long weekend now over, Merriman noted occupancy was a little higher than previous years at campgrounds and sat around 30 per cent. She added all campgrounds opened on time in spite of the four-day power outage last week.

Construction is also ongoing at the Nemeiben Lake Campground as an expansion of the parking lot is underway. Trees have already been removed and gravel is being spread for more truck and trailer parking.

“On the long weekends, we do get a lot of use, so we’re just trying to do our best to provide a little bit more parking area,” Merriman said. “We will get it looking nice in the section done right now, then probably work on the rest in the fall.”
