Call for Indigenous Artists

May 27, 2021 | 9:46 AM

The Treaty 6 Contemporary Art Collective is looking for Indigenous artists to exhibit work in the first-ever Treaty 6 Contemporary Art Festival — to be held in Saddle Lake Cree Nation, Treaty 6 Territory, September 11, 2021.

Visual Artists, Performance Artists, Musicians, and Spoken-word Artists are encouraged to apply, but every artist is welcome.

A MENTORSHIP PROGRAM is also available for emerging artists. This program will commission emerging artists to create new work under the mentorship of industry professionals. The work created in the mentorship program will be showcased in the festival.

For Established Artists:

Guidelines:

  • Must be living/working in Treaty 6 Territory (preferably in Alberta) and/or surrounding areas
  • Must be Indigenous
  • Must be an established artist (anyone who has exhibited work in a professional setting)

Artists who are already established in their respective fields can simply apply to the festival to exhibit/perform their own work without any mentorship.

Established artists will be paid an honorarium to exhibit, but will not receive any benefits from the mentorship program.

Applications for exhibition will be accepted until June 16.

The Mentorship program (for emerging artists):

Guidelines

  • Must be living/working in Treaty 6 Territory (preferably in Alberta)
  • Must be Indigenous
  • Must be an emerging artist (anyone who has not exhibited their work in a professional setting)

Successful applicants will be determined based on the work featured in their social media, online portfolios/CVs, and reviews/news articles.

Each emerging artist that is accepted into the mentorship program will be mentored by a professional artist in the field of Visual Art, Performance Art, Music or Spoken-word in order to create an entirely new project made specifically for the festival.

Each emerging artist will have access to artistic resources (such music recording equipment) and will receive a commission for their work.

The artists chosen for the mentorship program will exhibit the new work alongside established artists in the Treaty 6 Contemporary Art Festival.

  • VISUAL ARTISTS: must create a short series
  • PERFORMANCE ARTISTS: must create a 25 – 40 minute work.
  • MUSICIANS: must create an EP
  • SPOKEN-WORD: must create 10 to 15 minute work.

And remember, emerging artists in the mentorship program will receive financial support from the collective in order to make the best work possible. Travel and a guaranteed spot in the festival line-up will also be provided to the emerging artists for the festival.

Applications for the mentorship program will be accepted until June 16.
