Rainy weather on the way with possible non-severe thunderstorm

Jun 10, 2021 | 12:42 PM

Up to 30 millimetres of rain is expected in the tri-communities by Saturday.

The forecast is calling for close to 10 mm of rain by the end of Thursday with potentially another 20 mm expected Friday. Sara Hoffman, Climate Change and Environment Canada Meteorologist, explained the rain will start patchy and showery but become more significant before the low-pressure leaves the area on Saturday.

“An approaching low-pressure system from Montana moving northeastward into the Province of Saskatchewan will spread an area of rain out ahead of it and that should impact La Ronge,” said Hoffman. “Rain should start as soon as late this afternoon or into this evening.”

She also warned there’s a chance of a non-severe thunderstorm Thursday in the La Ronge area.

“I’d remind everyone that every thunderstorm has lightning and lightning can be quite dangerous,” Hoffman said. “Lightning is not something we warn for, so if you hear thunder, you are within striking distance of lightning and it’s time to get to somewhere safe.”

Thursday is expected to reach a high of 20 C with an overnight low of 13 C. Friday will hit a high of 15 C during the day followed by 22 C on Saturday. There will be a mix of sun and cloud over the weekend with Sunday forecasted to reach 25 C.

According to Environment Canada, spring 2021 (March, April and May) has been the sixteenth driest out of 56 years of record keeping. May itself has been the 17th wettest.

“May probably helped to bring that spring from less of a dry situation because May helped to regulate that,” Hoffman said. “There was more precipitation.”
