Residents updated about town council progress during virtual address

Jun 10, 2021 | 4:57 PM

A town council virtual address was held Wednesday for residents of La Ronge wanting to learn more about what their local leadership has been up to.

There were a number of topics discussed such as economic development, community wellness and more. La Ronge Mayor Colin Ratushniak also explained the town’s vision and mission statement to those in attendance, noting La Ronge should be a safe regional centre where residents and visitors can explore the community.

“The Town of La Ronge delivers sustainable growth and provides residents, visitors, and investors with value-added municipal services that support our regional community, economy, and industry partners in a progressive and transparent way,” he said.

Ratushniak mentioned in recent months, town council had the opportunity to do some strategic planning in what they want to see happen in the next four years. He also noted there will be a zero per cent tax increase for residents in 2021 and that the new administrator Steven Brown has been on staff for four months.

During the meeting, it was announced Breanna Parbst has been hired as the town’s economic development coordinator and she started May 25. She has previous experience in event planning and tourism.

“We’re starting to work on what we’re going to be calling a Highway 102 economic corridor master plan, so that we can continually build ways to bring new business to town,” Ratushniak said. “That way we don’t have people driving through the tri-communities without stopping in to hopefully spend some of their precious dollars in town.”

Another main goal of town council is to increase communication between leadership and residents. That will likely include a revamp of the municipal website, as well as administration becoming more active on social media. The revamp could also include the town’s website being available on an app, so residents can report concerns easier and administration can pass information to residents more efficiently.

“We a pursuing truth and reconciliation training for our staff and we’re also looking at putting up the Treaty Six flag in front of the town office,” Ratushniak added.

Ratushniak also talked about the work currently being done by RC Strategies. That includes a Parks, Open Space and Trails Master Plan, and Mel Hegland Uniplex feasibility study for an estimated cost of $90,000. Part of the work involves a survey La Ronge residents are encouraged to complete by June 30.
