22-year-old P.A. product Schneider finds coaching spot with Ice Wolves

He may only be 22 years old, but Prince Albert’s Kyle Schneider has already found himself a coaching job.

The La Ronge Ice Wolves announced on Monday morning that Schneider will be the team’s new assistant coach behind bench boss and general manager Kevin Kaminski.

Schneider started and finished his Junior A career with the Ice Wolves, after playing in three games in the 2016-17 season as a call-up from his hometown Prince Albert Mintos, before playing his final 25 games in the SJHL with the Ice Wolves in the 2019-20 season.

Known as a hard-nosed player, Schneider registered a goal, three assists and 147 penalty minutes in those final 25 games. Schneider also suited up for the SJHL’s Melfort Mustangs and the Selkirk Steelers of the MJHL.

“I can’t thank Kevin Kaminski and the La Ronge Ice Wolves enough for giving me this opportunity to be the assistant coach of the team,” Schneider said in an announcement from the Ice Wolves. “I always knew I wanted to try and coach someday, but I never thought I would have the chance to start my career off with such an established coach and a great SJHL organization. I’m excited to get things started this summer and I can’t wait to be back up in La Ronge in a loud, packed barn.”

In 80 regular season games in the SJHL and MJHL, he recorded 402 penalty minutes.

Schneider, who was a fan favourite in La Ronge, takes over for Gaelan Patterson. Patterson is now the head coach of the Port Alberni Bombers in the VIJHL and spent three seasons in La Ronge.

“Schneids brings everything, he has great leadership and passion for the game. He knows what it takes to win and has a fantastic attitude that will go a long away with the players,” said Ice Wolves Head Coach and GM Kevin Kaminksi.

“He just has so many intangibles to contribute to the players, organization and community of La Ronge — and he bleeds teal. He loves it here and wants to win a championship that was cut short for us a few years ago. I am very excited to work with Schneids as he knows the game, but he told me he wants to be a sponge and learn every detail he can to get better each day. We welcome Kyle back to the Ice Wolves where he belongs.”
