In-custody death in Sandy Bay

Jul 6, 2021 | 4:04 PM

A woman who was in police custody after an arrest in Sandy Bay in the far northeast of the province has died. The death happened Sunday night.

RCMP said an independent investigation of the in-custody death of the 44-year-old woman will be done by the Moose Jaw Police Service.

Police said the woman, who was being held in the Sandy Bay detachment, was discovered unresponsive. Two police officers and, later, EMS performed lifesaving measures but she was later pronounced deceased.

They are not releasing the woman’s name nor why she was arrested.

The woman had been taken into custody earlier in the evening in relation to what police labelled an ongoing investigation.

In accordance with the RCMP Act, Saskatchewan RCMP has requested the Moose Jaw Police Service conduct an independent external investigation into the circumstances surrounding the in-custody death.

Saskatchewan RCMP has also requested the Saskatchewan Ministry of Justice and Attorney General appoint a second independent investigation observer of First Nation ancestry in accordance with the Saskatchewan Police Amendment Act, 2020.

Police are offering no further information at this time.
