Tri-Community Dance Club wants to make a permanent mark with new programming

A newly formed non-profit will bring a service to the La Ronge area that’s never happened permanently before.

In the spring of 2021, the Tri-Community Dance Club was officially incorporated after there was an initial call out for members last year. It’s chaired by Genevieve Candelora with Jessica Green as vice-chairperson, Jenny Wilkins as treasurer and Tamara Putz as secretary. There are also several members-at-large who are part of the board of directors.

“Once it was finally put out there, there was a lot of people who came to the table with some level of interest,” Candelora said. “Some people were interested in being on the board, which filled up right away, and some people were interest in putting their children in dance classes or helping out as volunteers. There was a really big interest and I think it’s something that’s absolutely wanted in the community.”

Candelora explained the goal of the club is to introduce community members to a variety of dance genres and hold workshops or classes on a more permanent and regular basis. The group wants to host events that are impressable and made for residents to really engage in.

Since becoming incorporated, the board of directors have done strategic planning, as well as reached out to Dance Saskatchewan and the Step It Up Dance Company in Saskatoon. They’ve also receive two grants and would like to use the funds for workshops targeting young people in August.

“There’s probably a lot of talent in our community because this isn’t something that’s ever been offered on the regular,” Candelora said, adding the group would like to consult the public in the coming months to determine what programming residents would like to see offered.

With all COVID-19 health measures expected to be rescinded on Sunday, Candelora noted it will allow the club to accommodate larger numbers and for participants to interact as dancers. Residents can find out more about the club on its Facebook page here.

“We were going to try and work within COVID restrictions, but…it will definitely open up the doors for us to do more in the community, for sure,” she said.
