Planned power outage in multiple northern communities after vehicle collision

There will be a planned power outage today after a vehicle hit a power line southwest of La Ronge.

Scott McGregor with SaskPower told paNOW in order to conduct the repair they will have conduct a planned power outage this afternoon from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

It will affect 6,800 customers in La Ronge, Air Ronge, Stanley Mission, Weyakwin, Waskesiu, Timber Bay, and Southend.

“It’s a transmission line so it’s going to have a pretty broad effect in terms of the outage but our crews will get everything on as soon as they possibly can to conduct these repairs,” he said.

They hope to have customers back on early in Weyakwin by 3:30 p.m. but worse case scenario they will have power on by 7 p.m. along with the other communities noted.

La Ronge Regional Fire Department Chief Keaton Cloud explained a call was received at 9 a.m. and a crew was dispatched to the scene to assess the situation.

He noted it is unclear if there were injuries to the driver at this time, adding the patient left with La Ronge EMS prior to firefighters arriving.

Cloud mentioned it is a rare occurrence for fire crews to receive such a call.

“There have been a handful of times,” he said. “Often there’s minimal damage to the poles if hit. This pole took a direct hit from the truck.”
