Golf pro returns to La Ronge to share his skills with local youth
Playing the sport he loves, golf took Jerry Christiansen around the world but he’s back in La Ronge sharing his skills with some of the community’s youngest residents.
When Christiansen moved back to town earlier this year, he knew he’d somehow be involved in teaching golf to others. He quickly decided to volunteer with the junior golf program at Eagle Point Resort and has been teaching kids the sport every Monday since the course opened in May.
“We had a lot of kids who hadn’t touched a club before,” Christiansen said. “We started right from the basics with everything. I think the most important thing is learning how to have fun out here, learning some of the rules of the game and just the cool things that golf teaches you like integrity and responsibility.”
The junior golf program has proven to be popular as about 40 kids, on average, attend the sessions. The most to show up on a Monday is 60 kids, which Christiansen explained was impressive considering concerns about COVID-19 and kids being in and out of school.
