Councils approve financial request for Ice Wolves to purchase orange jerseys
Air Ronge and La Ronge councils have approved a monetary request from the Ice Wolves to assist in purchasing orange jerseys for the team.
The jerseys will be worn at an Ice Wolves game this upcoming season and ultimately be auctioned off to raise funds for a yet to be announced group that assists residential school survivors. Both councils were each asked for $1,000, which were approved at regular meetings earlier this week.
“We have a lot of people who play on the team who come from all over Canada and even from the United States, and what better of an opportunity for them to not only wear that orange jersey, but to truly start understanding the meaning and the context of why they are wearing orange,” Air Ronge Mayor Julie Baschuk said.
She explained the Ice Wolves are mentors for young people in the tri-communities and it will be a powerful statement for the team to wear orange. Baschuk noted the end result will hopefully be a greater understanding of the effects of residential schools and the legacy they left behind.
