Cumberland House Cree Nation rebuilds band office after 2019 fire

Aug 10, 2021 | 5:00 PM

Cumberland House Cree Nation is celebrating the opening of its new band office.

The new 15,500 square-foot building is described as higher performance and energy efficient, in a media release issued Monday. It notes the new facility is a replacement for the former band office that burned down due to arson in December 2019.

“Thanks to the settlement of the insurance claim, we were able to start rebuilding six months ago and watch our dreams become a reality,” Chief Rene Chaboyer is quoted. “You really have to see it. It is beyond what we could have expected. It is not only highly functional and environmentally friendly, but it is also absolutely beautiful.”

The new space houses administrative services and includes 44 offices, several meeting spaces and training spaces, staff facilities and views of the Saskatchewan River.

The two-storey office also features a highly insulated building envelope, triple pane windows, exceptional mechanical design and wood pellet furnace. It was built on time and on budget.

“This is truly a great day for all of us,” Chaboyer said. “Our band council delivered on its promise to rebuild and provide an even better facility. We did it with our own funding and according to the schedule we set.”

When the former band office was destroyed, irreplaceable historical data and material was lost such as documents about a specific land claim, traditional land use maps and photographs. Much of the band’s data was stored online, however, and was recoverable.
