Ice Wolves conclude hockey school, prepare for identification camp

The La Ronge Ice Wolves 2021 Hockey School wrapped up Thursday with awards and a barbecue.

Since Monday, approximately 50 participants between the ages of five to 17 years old took part in the event meant to prepare them for the upcoming hockey season. It was led by Ice Wolves head coach Kevin Kaminski, assistant coach Kyle Schnieder, current players and other volunteers.

“I thought it was an exceptional camp. All of the instructors did an awesome job,” Kaminski said. “Hard work and fun is what we like to have. I think that’s what makes it very successful. It’s a blessing to have some hard working kids who keep wanting to learn and keep wanting to have fun.”

The younger participants focused on the fundamentals of the sport such as powerskating, c-cuts and agility, while the older ones got into drills and more enhanced training. Time was spent learning on the ice and during dryland sessions.

Many of those who took part will be joining La Ronge Minor Hockey this fall, but several kids from Stanley Mission also attended the school. Kaminski explained it was a good way for kids to get back on the ice, especially since all the COVID health restrictions have been lifted.

“There was a lot of good compliments from the parents and it was a great week, not only for us instructors, but also for the kids,” he said. “I’ve learned so much through my playing and my coaching days and, for me, I have to give it back.”

The next major event for the team is the 2021 Fall Howl Identification Camp held Aug. 27 to 29 in Saskatoon. It’s open to players with birth years between 2001 to 2006 and Kaminski said approximately 100 will be divided into five teams.

“From there, we’ll take 35 to 40 kids and head to La Ronge Sunday night for main camp,” Kaminski said.

The Ice Wolves will begin the 2021-2022 regular season at home Sept. 24 against the Nipawin Hawks. The exhibition schedule starts Sept. 5 with the team in Flin Flon and ends at home Sept. 17.
