Artist selected for new tri-community mural

Lac La Ronge Indian Band member Sammi Kopeck, 21, has been selected to paint a mural at a yet to be determined space in the tri-communities.

She was selected by the La Ronge Arts Council, which previously encouraged residents to apply after successfully receiving a grant from the Town of La Ronge. An interactive arts workshop will be held Sept. 3 at the Alex Robertson Public Library to discuss ideas about what the mural will look like.

“We will be having a little activity for everybody who comes just so I can kind of get the community’s input in what they want to mural to represent,” Kopeck said. “That way it’s a collaboration piece. It’s still my execution and general idea.”

Kopeck doesn’t know exactly what the mural will include, but it will be nature themed with bright colours that catch the eye. In her own artwork, she enjoys using a fine-line style with micron pens and that will also make its way into the mural.

Kopeck decided to apply for the project because she was looking to build her profile as an artist. She had to submit an art portfolio, cover letter and expansion about what her vision for the mural would be.

“I decided it would be a cool opportunity,” Kopeck said. “I didn’t know if I would get it and thought it would be fun to apply.”

She will be organizing the project alongside doing her work with the Lac La Ronge Indian Band, the La Ronge Regional Fire Department, as a post-secondary student and as a doula.

The mural will join a second art project completed in recent years by the La Ronge Arts Council. In 2019, a mural by Allen Morrow depicting the tri-community’s commitment to reconciliation was painted at the urban reserve in La Ronge.
