Woman sentenced in hit-and-run death

Sep 7, 2021 | 5:03 PM

Judge Robert McKenzie sentenced a 25-year-old woman to 90 days in jail followed by one year of probation in the hit-and-run death of a young man last summer.

Sandra Halkett, who was initially charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing death, had plead guilty to one count of failing to stop at the scene of an accident involving bodily harm. By the time she was sentenced Tuesday, she had already spent 15 months under house arrest.

Halkett was also sentenced to 60 hours of community service, ordered to seek counselling and will be prohibited from operating a motor vehicle for one year.

On June 14, 2020, officers were dispatched to the report of an unconscious male located on Queen St. Upon arrival, police located Lex McKenzie who was unconscious and displayed injuries consistent with being struck by a vehicle. He was pronounced deceased at the scene by EMS.

Judge McKenzie stated Halkett could have been travelling up to twice the speed limit when she struck the victim that night. He said damage to the blue Ford-150 speaks volumes and that the victim died from blunt force trauma to the head and neck.

Prior to the incident, Judge McKenzie noted Halkett had a clean criminal record, had issues surrounding alcohol abuse and had been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. He said Halkett is remorseful for what occurred that tragic night.

Lex McKenzie was 18 years old at the time of his death and he was the father of a baby girl.
