Officers rescue stranded travellers near Stony Rapids

Three people, including a child, were rescued Sept. 4 after the vehicle they were travelling became stuck in the mud.

An RCMP media release stated that on Sept. 3 at approximately 11 p.m., Black Lake RCMP were dispatched to a report of overdue travellers in Stony Rapids.

At about 4 p.m. that afternoon, an adult male, an adult female and a four-year-old child had taken a utility task vehicle (UTV) out on area trails. At 8 p.m., the female had phoned a family member, indicating that the UTV had become stuck in the muskeg, but then the line disconnected.

Police noted concerned family and friends, who were familiar with the area, began searching for the group, then called the Black Lake detachment for assistance. The search went on until late in the evening but it became too dark and dangerous to continue until daybreak.

The missing group was able to make phone contact again at 6:30 a.m. on Sept. 4. A police officer and conservation officer responded, and they were able to locate the missing individuals at approximately 10:10 a.m.

All of them were safe, uninjured and required no medical attention. They were able to make a fire and shelter in the UTV overnight, protecting them from the 10 C temperature that night.

“Everyone was very relieved when we found the man, woman and child safe and sound,” RCMP Cst. Sean Carlson said. “It was very lucky that they were able to find a cell signal and let family know they were stuck. That’s not always the case in the far North.”

If anyone is heading out on off-road vehicles, or hunting or trapping in remote areas, RCMP advise they can contact their local detachment and provide travel plans.
