A byelection has been called in the Town of La Ronge to fill a seat left vacant after the sudden passing of Hugh Watt.

The announcement was made during a Committee of the Whole meeting on Tuesday, where the byelection date was set for Nov. 30. Current members of council include Mayor Colin Ratushniak, Deputy Mayor Jordan McPhail, as well as councillors Abby Besharah, Joe Hordsyki, Viviana Ruiz-Arcand and Ryan Veteri.

Watt, 58, had been a town councillor since he was first elected in October 2016. His funeral was held Aug. 13 at La Ronge’s Mel Hegland Uniplex, which was attended by hundreds of people.

Following his death, the Town of La Ronge released a statement calling Watt a person who devoted a large amount of time and effort into improving the quality of life enjoyed by all town residents and businesses. He was known as a mentor and advisor for the town’s staff and council.
