Jordan Kolbeck is settling into his new role as a superintendent of education for Northern Lights School Division (NLSD).

Kolbeck spent 13 years as a principal at St. Pascal Community School in Green Lake, before applying for the superintendent of education position this summer with the support of his family and colleagues. The school division announced he was selected for the role in August and he has since been busy learning his new responsibilities.

“I felt that now would be a good opportunity to serve my community and other communities in the North in a different capacity,” he wrote in an email to larongeNOW. “I was also interested in learning more about the role — and what better way to learn than by doing? The superintendency is based out of the Beauval sub-office, but as you can imagine, involves a lot of travelling.”

In all, Kolbeck is responsible for six schools including Jan’s Bay Community School, Lakeview School in Cole Bay, Valley View Community School in Beauval, St. Pascal Community School in Green Lake, along with Minahik Waskahigan Elementary School and Minahik Waskahigan High School, both located in Pinehouse Lake.

His job is to support learning and teaching in schools, as well as respond to school needs. That involves supporting school leadership, providing feedback to teachers on their teaching and to pursue the goals of the school division, which include helping students achieve The Good Life — mitho-pimatisowin – hotiyé ʔeghena.

“September is a very busy month for us and school staff and leadership has been doing an amazing job to get schools up and running while navigating unfamiliar territory,” Kolbeck wrote. “I’ve only been able to settle in and manage the learning curve because of the support of other senior administrators, and the patience and kindness the schools I serve have shown me.”

Kolbeck was born in Carrot River and graduated high school in North Battleford. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree, a Bachelor of Education and a Masters in Educational Administration from the University of Saskatchewan.

In a statement released by NLSD, director of education Jason Young called Kolbeck a strong team leader with a depth of experience as a teacher.

“Mr. Kolbeck possesses exemplary communication and character, both of which will be assets in collaborative educational environments throughout the division,” Young stated. “His understanding of education within the northern context, organizational culture and commitment to student success will serve NLSD#113 well.”
