Auction begins for orange jerseys worn by Ice Wolves

Oct 21, 2021 | 5:00 PM

Orange jerseys worn by the La Ronge Ice Wolves are currently being auctioned to the public.

Bids can be made on the team’s Facebook page with hundreds of dollars pouring in since the auction started this morning. The auction will remain open until Oct. 29 at the end of the second period when the Ice Wolves host the Kindersley Klippers.

The Ice Wolves originally planned to wear the special jerseys during a home game on Sept. 30 to honour the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, but the jerseys didn’t arrive on time. They have since been worn during away games in both Kindersley and North Battleford.

“I think as an Indigenous community, we’ve had very good support in the surrounding area,” Ice Wolves head coach Kevin Kaminski said. “People come to watch the Ice Wolves and we felt this was a good thing to do to show our support for the people around La Ronge and a way to kind of give back to the people that have been affected by this horrendous disaster (legacy of residential schools) that has happened.”

The Ice Wolves are currently near the bottom of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League rankings with three wins out of seven games for eight points. They have one overtime loss and a shoot out loss as well.

On Wednesday, the Ice Wolves were in Humboldt for the first of a series of four away games where they lost 3-2. The team plays the Estevan Bruins tonight, the Weyburn Red Wings on Friday and the Notre Dame Hounds on Sunday.

“It’s a tough road trip, but also sometimes it’s good to get on the road,” Kaminksi said. “You get to bond a bit and get to know your teammates a little bit more. Sometimes you come together more, maybe there’s not as much pressure on the road as there is at home. We’ve got to simplify, we’ve got to just play a good, smart, solid road game here tonight and hopefully get a win and we can keep on pushing to get back into playoff contention.”
